About NetAlert

NetAlert is part of the Australian Government's internet safety initiative which consists of a wide range of activities. Together, these activities provide a comprehensive response to the needs of the Australian community in protecting their families online.

The NetAlert initiative is managed by the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE) and includes:

  • a website to provide advice about protecting children online, as well as  information about how the filters work.

The free availability of internet content filters under the National Filter Scheme ended on 31 December 2008. Continuing users of internet content filters obtained under the National Filter Scheme can access free technical assistance and telephone support for their chosen filter until 30 June 2010.

For more information visit the DBCDE website (www.dbcde.gov.au).

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) manages a national cyber-safety education program which complements the NetAlert activities. This program includes:

  • undertaking targeted information and awareness-raising campaigns, activities and programs
  • developing cyber-safety education materials for use in schools and at home
  • researching current trends in cyber-safety
  • managing the Cyber-safety Contact Centre (1800 880 176), a national telephone helpline offering advice about a range of internet safety matters, as well as support for people who obtained a filter under the National Filter Scheme.

The ACMA cyber-safety activities aim to give children, their parents/ carers and teachers, sound advice on how best to manage online risks, so their experiences are safe and positive.

ACMA is also responsible for dealing with complaints and investigations in regard to illegal or prohibited content under the online content scheme in the Broadcasting Services Act 1992.
